If you are considering living in a RV in college, but do not have a
capable tow vehicle to tow your RV with, there are RV moving services
who will tow your RV from park to park. Of course, you could not go on
vacations or weekend getaways with your RV if you choose this option.
After you have found the type of RV you
want to live in at your desired price point, the next step is to
inspect your prospective RV carefully to avoid unwanted surprises down
the road. Check the roof for leaks with a garden hose, and examine the
interior of your prospective RV for any signs of past water leakage. If
a leak goes unchecked, it could develop into thousands of dollars worth
of damage. While inside the RV, turn each of the RV's appliances on to
check them for good working order, and run water through the Rv's
plumbing system to inspect it for leaks.
Finally, inspect the axles and tires of
the RV. Be sure that the axles have been lubricated properly, and that
the tires are not cracked. If the tires are cracked, they must be
replaced immediately, or a tire blowout when towing could occur. RV
trailer tires cost around $100 a tire, so factor this into your
purchase price if necessary.
There are two
main types of towable RV's , a fifth wheel and a travel trailer. A
fifth wheel feels spacious and open inside, but it must be towed with a
full size pickup truck. A travel trailer, on the other hand, can be
towed by pickup trucks or SUV's. It is important to compare the weight
ratings of the towable RV you wish to buy with the towing capacities of
the vehicle you wish to tow with to avoid overloading, a dangerous
situation.

If you are going to live in a RV in college, you have to
make some compromises. Those beautiful, 40 foot long
painted diesel pushers are out. Most likely, any kind of self powered
RV will be cost prohibitive to a person planning to live in an RV in
college due to the sheer cost of acquisition, depreciation, and
maintenence expenses.
Some type of towable RV will almost
certainly make the most financial sense for a cost minded college
student, due to their relativly low cost of initial acquisition and
slow rate of depreciation. A functional, serviceable and in many cases
a very appealing to the eye used towable RV can be had for $3000-7000
dollars.
